Day 4 – National Novel Writing Month

Have you ever looked at a word and felt it was spelled incorrectly,  only to look it up and find out you actually did spell it properly? And you stare at it trying to figure out why you thought it was wrong, but can’t stop thinking that it is in fact spelled incorrectly?  That’s what I’m doing right now with the word “national”. I know it’s properly spelled, but for some reason it doesn’t look right.

Anyway, I did some writing today. It was so very hectic I wasn’t even sure I’d find time, but I changed my normal set up and did the writing instead of other things. It worked out well I guess because I’m officially over the 10,000 word mark! I have a total of 11,011! So that’s definitely good news.

On another note, I should have a bit of time to write tomorrow and get my word count up. My brother is coming along really well too and is close for the total number of words. We are doing well.

I also had a random idea while grocery shopping today. Well it wasn’t really random. I was thinking about a concept that my brother and I had been discussing based on a song lyric. It spurred something that I realized fit perfectly with part of the story that happens much later on. I had to quickly type it into my phone so I could insert it when I had time later. I have yet to put it in but it’s in my phone and will definitely become a big part of the larger story line. I am excited with where the whole thing is going.

Hope everyone is doing well and is still as motivated to get their word count up!

Day 3 – National Novel Writing Month

Today has felt non stop but finally, after eating dinner, I was able to sit down and get some writing in for the challenge.

I finished one of the chapters, tacking on another 1,956. It gives me the grand total of 8,500. Not bad for the first three days, however I feel like I want to be writing more. I am making time for it when I can and I’m doing better than I did prior to taking on this challenge. There’s no doubt in my mind that I’ll reach the 50,000 words and that I’ll finish the manuscript. What seems to be pressing lately is that I feel like I should be writing more each day. Maybe I’m just thinking I should be pushing myself harder because I’m doing this challenge. Maybe it’s because I’m a bit anxious at getting the whole thing done and feeling accomplished at completing it. And maybe it’s because I can take some personal challenges a bit too far and want things done faster than it’s actually capable of going. It’s probably all three.

Anyway, I’m making good progress and I am feeling good about the whole thing. I actually ordered one of their t-shirts online. I’m looking forward to getting it in the mail, although it’ll probably be a while.

Hope everyone is doing well and getting that writing in!

Day 2 – National Novel Writing Month

As it stands, today is a busy day. So I stole away as much time as I could to get some writing in for the challenge.

I didn’t get as much done as I did my very first night writing. However, I did get some writing done later that day and then just now. So I had the initial 3,491, plus the 1,235 that I wrote later that day, and now to add to the total another 1,818. This gives me the grand total of 6,544! I am officially over my first 5,000 words!

What is great about these chapters I’m working on is that when I sit down, I suddenly feel like “oh I need to add this” and “I need to work this in”. My outline works well but there are so many extra details and expansion that I want to do. By this process my story is becoming longer and longer and so are the chapters. Of course it won’t be some massive book, but it will be longer than I initially wrote, which for me is a good thing!

If I get more writing done tonight and finish the chapter I started, I will update about it tomorrow after the writing for that day is done. For now though, I have to get back to other things that need to be accomplished before the day is out.

Hope everyone is doing well with the challenge!

Day 1 – National Novel Writing Month

It has officially started and I think I’m off to a good start.

I started at midnight of November 1st, and since that moment I have officially written my first 3,491 words of the challenge. I might not have to write tomorrow, though I probably will. I did a chapter and a half, and only have one more scene to write. They’re short, but there’s a very good reason for that. Either way, I only have 46,509 words left! I might be on a slight writer’s high right now. And yes, I do believe that exists.

I think I’m off to a good start. When I write next (which could be later today or at the same time tomorrow) I will be finishing at the very least the last half of the chapter. If not more. This last half of the chapter though will take up a fair bit since it’s a fairly important discussion that takes place. That might take up at least 2000 words.

Okay, I should stop because I’m a bit wired and I need my brain to calm down so I can sleep. I am excited and ready to keep going! And that’s a good thing and a bad thing because I don’t think I’ll be sleeping much this month.

I hope everyone has had a good start to their novel!

Two Days

There are only two days until National Novel Writing Month begins! Well less than that since I’ll be starting right at midnight of November 1st. So I guess it’s more like 32 hours. Either way, it’s fast approaching!

Since I haven’t come up with any new ideas for a story, I’m going to stick with my manuscript I’m working on. I am eager to get back to writing and I think I am definitely going in with a good attitude and plan.

While my brother and I were walking the dogs today, we got into an interesting discussion about the effectiveness of narrative and how when writing a certain way, the author can develop an interesting effect on the reader. We looked at a number of different authors and their use of first and/or third person narration. It became quite the lively discussion and we determined interesting, and different ways to establish certain information in a story. My brother is also taking on the challenge and we’re doing it together (working on our own individual story, but discussing ideas and concepts, while working on them at the same time).

Anyway, to those who are beginning this weekend for the challenge, I wish you all the best of luck! And those who aren’t doing it, I’m sure you’ll all have a wonderful November.

One week left

There is only about one week left before National Novel Writing Month begins.

I have been making notes, a chart, and using a notebook to keep track of everything I write and when during that month. I am going to track my progress that way, and I have created a plan in hopes of finishing with 50,000 words. I believe I am prepared.

I took some time, over the last bit, to try to think of something new if I were to start a new story for the challenge. I started writing out some ideas but when I got to the end of everything that had gone through my head, I realized I didn’t actually have anything solid. Needless to say, there wasn’t anything for me to build on and the story wasn’t interesting enough to keep me writing about it. I’ve tried to think of new ideas, but I still haven’t come up with anything. So, as it stands, I think I’ll be working on my novel and finishing the manuscript for the challenge.

I’ve also thought about how often I am going to post since I’ll be writing almost every day. At this point, I’m thinking I probably won’t end up having time to throw a post out there each time I write, but I’m going to try to do it anyways. If I can’t, then it’ll at least be every other day. Regardless, my posting will become more frequent, and possibly even more interesting during the month of November.

I hope that any of you who are taking on this challenge will be successful. I wish everyone the best of luck in it! I know that the creative people who take it on will do well with it.

National Novel Writing Month

I have some good news which I’d like to extend out to everyone.

So first off, I am planning on joining (or at the very least following the steps for) the National Novel Writing Month. Basically, you sign up and join, and for the month of November you aim to write 50,000 words of a novel. They have things set up to allow you to put in your word counts until you hit 50,000 by the end of the month, and then you upload your 50,000 word manuscript! Ta-da you’ve reached your goal!

I believe there is more to it than just that, but that’s a summarized idea of what it’s all about. I am still reading up on it myself.

You’re allowed to continue a manuscript you’re working on, or start a new one. According to the people my brother has spoken to about it (he plans to take on the challenge as well), most people prefer to start a new one as they find continuing what they’re working on made them miserable. I haven’t decided for certain what I’m going to do yet. I’d like to continue my current novel, and there’s a good chance I will, but if it were to get frustrating, I might start over with something entirely new. Again, I haven’t made up my mind. I still have the whole month of October to deliberate my choice.

I encourage anyone who is trying to get writing done and need that push to try it out. It does take self-discipline, but it’s worth a shot, and just think of how much you’ll have done already when November is over!

I hope many join. Apparently they had over 700,000 participants last year.

Anyway, as I try to do the National Novel Writing Month challenge, I will be posting more often – or at least trying to. So you should get more updates from me on a more consistent, and regular basis.

Day 43

An unexpected urge to be creative came over me and I decided it was time to harness that and put it to good use. I wrote and completed one more chapter. It’s not a long one like the last one I wrote, but it’s a good length and I’m okay with it. It will need editing though.

I’ve been meaning to do more writing but unfortunately, things have been more stressful than usual and it has both exhausted and destroyed any productive or creative inspiration in me. Things are still stressful but certain things have been resolved. I am hoping the others will be better by the end of next week. I am really, genuinely, hoping.

Anyway, I hope that everyone is having a good weekend.

The Rustic Owl

The Rustic Owl. A small cafe with great expectations and plenty of room for growth. A place where people go to grab a bite to eat, a nice warm drink, and enjoy the atmosphere of calmness, good conversation, and relaxation. Surrounded by the artwork of local artists, the feel of expression, one could easily find it an inspiring place for creativity. Perhaps, in the future, writers and artists will look back at their time, sitting in the wooden chairs, absorbing the rustic vibe of a place that served them their caffeine, giving them the energy to produce amazing pieces. Perhaps it will not only inspire the creative people, but create a place for anyone to come and be at home.

It is a place that takes you away from your busy life; a small home that puts you at ease, in the quietness of the country, and allows you to revel in the silence so desired in a noisy and constant city like Toronto. It is an escape.

The workers go about their business, filling orders, creating great treats and meals with a smile on their face. Their warmth allowing for a wonderful experience, as if the stress of the job never occurred to them. The kind smiles as they get your order makes you feel welcomed and at home. A wonderful difference from places like Tim Hortons and McDonalds, whose sole purpose is to get customers in and out as quickly as possible. Sure you could get your coffee, tea, and food to go, but why not sit down and relax, even if it’s just for a few minutes?

Their coffee is wonderfully unique, with aromas and flavours akin to coffee drinkers alike. Their teas are varied and allow for a selection for even the pickiest tea drinkers. A display sits attached to the counter full of delicious baked goods from cookies, to croissants, to muffins. Their baked goods alone can appeal to most dietary needs, allowing options for vegans and allergies to be accounted for. It’s not just the baked goods that could bring any one person into this authentically unique place in a city full of chain cafes, it’s the food. The Rustic Owl allows for decisions to be made from sandwiches and salads, to even a brunch menu – a rather unique and seductive offer in this cafe.

All around me, sitting in chairs, are people talking, smiles on their faces, wild hand gestures, and in depth conversations. Slight touches of the hands between new lovers, and a smile with softened eyes between couples who have spent years together. Friends regale others with their stories and their adventures; their lives made for entertainment and excitement among their group. Others, who are re-connecting, update each other on their lives, not quite as animated, but just as happy to see an old friend. Employees and co-workers come in, some order, some stay and chat, trying to get away from their busy work day if only for the duration of their coffee and lunch run. Tourists slip into the cafe expecting something different but are happy and relieved that it’s not another Starbucks, that the food here is fresh and delicious, and that it’s not like any other chain cafe. It’s that secret place that they can tell their friends about and recommend to go to if they’re ever in the city.

It’s a home away from home, with excellent food, fresh coffee and tea, and prices that can appease just about anyone. The atmosphere creates a place to be, to hang out, to see friends, co-workers, and lovers. A place with a rustic vibe from their local artists, to their wooden chairs and tables, to the old typewriter that sits near the entrance. It is a place that you’ll find yourself going back to over and over again.

Day 42

All right so I finally managed to harvest some time and finish up that chapter I’d started last week. I think it’s coming along well. I’m being vague in some areas but with good reason, since I’m about to go into a lot of detail about these things in the next few chapters. Better to show than tell sometimes. Most of the time.

Anyway, it’s done! YAY! It’s two more scenes than I’d initially prepared for and I’m quite all right with that. I’m still a ways away from finishing the rough draft of the manuscript, but I’m happy that I’m getting back to writing more.

Also, a friend of mine asked me to write a short blog post/article on her and her husband’s cafe. Once I get the go ahead from her (I sent her what I had to see if it’s what she’s looking for, tone wise at least), I’ll be sure to link to it on here if not post it. It’ll be good for a lot of reason: exposure, published work, etc.

I have a busy week ahead of me but I’m hoping to squeeze in more time to write. I’ll be sure to try to update if I do get any more writing done. I hope everyone has a good week!
