Day 15

I thought I would get back into it sooner but unfortunately it took longer than I expected to recover from that job. I’m glad I have, and several things came up last week that prevented me from being in the proper frame of mind to get anything done – well anything done that would be worth keeping. Luckily, I got back into it tonight.

I looked at what I last wrote, and the whole thing came back to me. I decided to add more to the chapter, addressing things that happened in the past and allowing for further explanation into the culture and society that was once so prevalent. There are some more things I’ll add in order to iterate the contrast between the world before and the world now, but for the most part, I’m happy with how it’s turning out.

I have come to realize I need to do more showing in my writing as the last few bits I’ve written have been more telling. There are some things I can easily show (which I always make sure I do) but others I can only do by telling because of the context. I thought continuously about trying to change the context but I can’t see another way of doing it that would actually work as effectively and get across the important information I need to get across. So, it resulted in telling. I do plan to have a fair bit of showing in the upcoming chapters which will make it a lot better. I think that’s one thing where a lot of writers fail; they do more telling than they do showing. I could go on for a while so I’m going to cut it here.

Anyway, it felt good to get back into writing again. I’m going to try to get more done this week but I’ve met my goal for the week so it might not happen if time doesn’t permit. Either way, I’m glad I’m back into it, though I feel a bit rusty.

About rachelsparling

I'm a writer working on a manuscript for a novel. I love to write and I've been doing it for 17 years. Through several story ideas I have figured out what works and what doesn't, and I've learned a lot about myself and my writing style. I love to read and escape to many different worlds. I've also learned a lot about good writing and bad writing through both reading a lot and acquiring an education in English literature, and becoming an ESL teacher. I enjoy filming and photographing all sorts of things and putting together short documentaries and videos. I love my camera.
