Day 37

For the last few days, maybe closer to a week now, I’ve had this idea bobbing around my head. At first I decided I would just write whatever came to mind, and then today I continued to think about it. I started writing more to add to it. I’ve written two short chapters about this world and the characters. Not a whole lot to go on I’ll admit, but it was just an idea that’s sort of flourishing right now.

I’m still working on my other manuscript. I fell behind last week because everything was a bit ridiculous and I got thrown more work to do from my boss, which ate up my free time to write. This week has been a bit like that too. More work from my boss, less free time, and I spent the better part of yesterday quite sick. I’m still recovering today and barely feeling 100% but I’m doing better.

Anyway, I do plan to get more writing done for my manuscript. In fact I might start writing after I’m done this post (assuming I don’t get called away which very well could happen).

But the other idea I couldn’t ignore. It just keeps sitting there. I’ve decided to make it my pet project. I’m not going to do an outline for it, it’s just going to be there. If I get the urge to add something to it, I’ll write it unofficially (meaning on my iPad or cell phone as an email to myself and not on my laptop) and maybe post about it. It won’t be something that I think will turn into much, just something fun. I have different ideas for it so it should be interesting to say the least if it actually turns into anything.

I did a bit of writing for it, close to how much I usually get done in one day actually. Short but to the point. I’m okay with that. Like I said, it’s just a pet project where my imagination of some fantasy world will be driving it. So very different and much less structured considering how much of my effort is usually used in planning, outlining, and structuring the story to make sure there are no huge loop holes or any other thing that usually turns into really bad writing. I do know a few people who write just from the start and see what happens. There are a number of good writers that do that. I do find that writers who at least have a general idea of what they want to do – main story arch wise – can produce great literature even if they don’t have it outlined. It really depends on the writer and what strategies work for them though.

Anyway, enough rambling for today. Hope everyone has a good week/weekend!

About rachelsparling

I'm a writer working on a manuscript for a novel. I love to write and I've been doing it for 17 years. Through several story ideas I have figured out what works and what doesn't, and I've learned a lot about myself and my writing style. I love to read and escape to many different worlds. I've also learned a lot about good writing and bad writing through both reading a lot and acquiring an education in English literature, and becoming an ESL teacher. I enjoy filming and photographing all sorts of things and putting together short documentaries and videos. I love my camera.
